Building Folding Shelves

Folding shelves can be useful for anyone who needs temporary shelves that can be folded down for motion or storage. The strength of your folding book rack depends on the wood of your choice. Barred comes from conifers like pines and cedar, while deciduous trees come from deciduous trees like maple and cherry. Pine is often the cheapest wood in lumber stores and will be good for some shelves of pocketbooks, but it will not last for as long as oak or other deciduous trees and can bend under the weight of bound books.

Instructions

Measure and cut six 3 1/2 foot long pieces and eight 8-inch long pieces of 1-by-2 timber. Lay out two of the three half-meter pieces about 6 1/2 inches apart, and put an 8-inch piece above them at the top and bottom. Make sure the corners and edges line up to form square folding shelves and nail the 8-inch discs in place. Measure 14 inches up from the bottom of the rectangle and nail another 8-inch on board over the two longer pieces, making it an even height, with its peak at 14-inch mark. Do the same at 25 and 36 inches up, measure from the same point. Repeat the process with two further 3 1/2 foot pieces of wood. These are the pages of your book rack.

Attach a one-of-four band at the top and bottom of these two pieces. Nail your remaining strips in place at 14, 25 inches and 36 inches from the bottom of 1-by-2 discs. Turn this piece over so the 1-by-2s are upwards – this is the back of your book folding shelves. Screw one side of a left-hand hinge on the left-hand side of the rack, using the hinge hardware, at 6 inches from the bottom. Place the screw in the hinge s hole and run it using a drill / screwdriver with Phillip’s little head. If the wood is too hard for it to drive smoothly, use a 1/8 inch drill to start the hole, and then drive the screw.

Make sure the rounded part of the hinge is facing the center of the rack and the folding part of the hinge lines up with the edge of the wood. The loose side of the hinge should fold inward, towards the middle of the grid. Do the same for a hinge 2 inches from the top of the same 1-by-2, then repeat the process on the other side? Load one of the rack sides you created on the edge of one of the wooden rails that you only attached to the hinges. Make sure the top and bottom line up and 8-inch strips face inward, towards the hinges. Unscrew the other half of each hinge on the side of the rack and repeat for the other side.
